Farida Hughes is an American painter and interdisciplinary artist driven by process and medium, and fluidity and control. She creates works that are luminous expressions of interconnectedness. Working in abstraction, she uses the color, form, and transparency of her medium as both process and content, reflecting on sociological themes such as the blending of ethnicities and cultures, bridging divides, and finding joy in known and imagined environments.

Her work lies within a canon of color-rich, biomorphic abstraction, but combined with influences from contemporary light art and time-based practices. Collected narratives and observation of human interactions influence spherical and stacked curvilinear shapes, streamlines, and flowing compositions. Mixing paint into epoxy resin generates a slow build of lush, glossy surfaces, developing moments of hiding, revealing, and merging as underlying layers leisurely expose themselves.

Hughes’ artworks encourage emotional connection through vibrant palettes and candy-like, glossy surfaces. The fluidity, transparency, and color harmonies of her medium guide her metaphorical subject matter of interconnectedness, which is felt before it is known.
