Farida Hughes is an American artist who creates paintings and interdisciplinary artworks that are luminous expressions of interconnectedness. She utilizes abstraction as a pathway to reflect upon sociological themes, such as the blending of ethnicities and cultures, bridging divides, and finding joy in known and imagined environments.
Her work lies within a canon of color-rich, biomorphic abstraction combined with interests in contemporary light art and time-based practices. Collected narratives and observation of human interactions influence spherical and stacked curvilinear shapes, streamlines, and flowing compositions. Mixing paint into epoxy resin generates a slow build of lush, glossy surfaces, developing moments of hiding, revealing, and merging as underlying layers leisurely expose themselves.
Hughes’ artworks encourage emotional connection through vibrant palettes and glossy surfaces. The fluidity, transparency, and color harmonies of her medium guide a metaphorical subject matter of interconnectedness which is felt before it is known.
